If you’re struggling to find a project management job, this will help
One question I get a lot in my community is “How do you start a project management career with no experience?”
People often tell me they’re struggling to get a project management job because they have too much education and no experience, or they’re lacking in experience AND education. This is a classic problem that many aspiring project managers run into.
If this sounds anything like you, here are a few tips for kicking off your project management career.
1. Think outside the box
You have no experience… Or so you think. But I can almost guarantee that if you really think about it, you’ll realize that you actually DO have some project experience but you just don’t know it.
When you’re in an interview or creating your resume, you need to pull out scenarios about projects you have been a part of.
If you were in school, you likely did group work or group projects. Think about those experiences and relate that to project management. Although it’s not an “official project” where you had an official project title and role, it’s still relevant experience because you were ultimately playing your part to accomplish some kind of project successfully.
2. Start right where you are
If you’re already working in an organization and looking to get into project management, stay right where you are and get some experience there.
Every organization has projects and initiatives. Even if they don’t call it a project, anything with a start date, end date, and a deliverable is a project.
Get involved with projects right where you are because ANY project experience is project experience you can put on your resume. Don’t think that getting an official project management job is the be-all and end-all… Get experience right where you are first!
