Common mistakes project managers make when using SharePoint

SharePoint for project management is an extremely powerful tool. But the last thing you want to do is have all kinds of issues when using it simply because you’re not using it correctly!

There are some simple mistakes that people often make with SharePoint for project management that are easy to avoid. It’s all about knowing how to use SharePoint as a tool instead of having it be a hindrance to your project’s success.

Here are a few mistakes to avoid when creating and using a SharePoint site for projects.

1. Not including a welcome page

It’s so critical with SharePoint to customize the site and add a welcome page so that it’s user-friendly, welcoming, and enticing for people to use.

Here are some things you should consider adding to your welcome page:

  • Explain what the SharePoint site is all about
  • Write your project scope statement
  • List milestones and key deliverables
  • Include links to important project documents for easy access

This welcome page will help people feel comfortable with using the SharePoint site and ensure it’s user-friendly.

2. Poor navigation

If people can’t navigate the SharePoint site intuitively, they’re not going to use it… And the whole point is for people to use it!

The nice thing about SharePoint is that it’s easy to customize widgets so that it makes sense for your project AND is easy for your project team to navigate.

You can also edit and customize it throughout your project so that people always have easy access to whatever documents they need at that point in the project.

If your team has to spend time searching for stuff, they’re not going to use the SharePoint site. So, make sure it’s laid out optimally for navigation.
