The basics of gathering requirements (and how to make sure you don’t overlook anything)

So, you’ve received a project but you don’t know where to start with gathering project requirements. This can be one of the most daunting undertakings as a new project manager!

What requirements do you need to seek out?

How do you ensure you’re not overlooking anything?

Let’s break it down.

What does it mean to gather project requirements?

There is a difference between gathering project requirements prior to the concept officially becoming a project, versus gathering requirements once you’ve been given the project.

Let’s specifically talk about how to gather project requirements once you’ve been giving your marching orders.

In this sense, gathering project requirements is all about ensuring you understand what the project needs to deliver on and what you need to do to make that happen.

Some of those project requirements are standards and specifications that you need to ensure everyone is delivering on. Other requirements include details of the timing of your activities, who you need involved internally and externally, and any other strategic pieces of information that you need to uncover.

These pieces of information help you understand the justification of the project, who you’re going to need, and the specifics of what you need to do in a lot more detail.

How do you actually gather project requirements?

Now that you know what requirements you actually need to look for, it’s important to understand how to actually go about doing that.
