The most telling signs that you’re leading a successful team
If you’re a project manager or a team leader, then you understand the importance of building and maintaining high-performing teams.
If you don’t have a high-performing team, you won’t have a successful project. But the good news is that high-performing teams are best developed when you know where to put your focus as a leader.
So, let’s talk about some common characteristics of high-performing teams so that you can identify your team’s strengths and weaknesses.
1. Set clear expectations
In order for your team to perform well, they need to be clear on what they are supposed to do. When you’re setting expectations to build a high-performing team, here are some expectations you should ensure you set:
- Roles and Responsibilities: What are they supposed to be doing?
- Action List: What tasks are they in charge of? What areas are they responsible for?
- Behavior: What rules have been set around respectfulness, professionalism, teamwork, meeting deadlines, etc.?
2. Know how to overcome resistance to change
High-performing teams understand that there will be resistance to change, no matter what they are doing.
This is particularly true for a project team that’s going to be implementing something brand new that will change ways of working. You will have resistance to this, but high performing teams understand that, and instead of being afraid of it, they plan and prep for it. They put a change resistance plan together and they stick to it.
High-performing teams are open to conversations about resistance and finding solutions to overcome it.
