How people commonly progress through their project management career (so you can, too!)
Are you wondering what a project management career path might look like?
There are a couple common ways people become project managers, and some common roles that they find themselves in throughout their careers.
Becoming a Project Manager
Generally, there are two ways of becoming a project manager.
THE FIRST WAY is that you fall into the role, based on your professional career choice. This is probably the most common way that people becoming project managers.
For example, engineers constantly do projects. This is because they usually have initiatives with a specific start and end date, which is exactly what a project is. As a result, that professional role lends itself to project management.
Another example is a marketer, they create a lot of new ideas and organize product launches which naturally unfolds as a project due to their initiatives having a specific start and end date.
That being said, it’s incredibly important for organizations to teach individuals how to do project management. Although people might fall into project management roles, this doesn’t mean that they are automatically amazing project managers. There are still skills and techniques that need to be integrated into what they do.
THE SECOND WAY is to plan to become a project manager. You can go and get certification courses from post-secondary institutions, online courses, or even getting the PMP designation. Many people decide to go this route.
Whichever way you go, getting actual project experience is critical to becoming a good project manager.
