Everything you need to know about preventing workplace conflict
Have you ever struggled with workplace conflict?
Workplace conflict can create so much stress, make you lose sleep, and even have an impact on your health and wellbeing. It’s important to know how to avoid workplace conflict before it arises or worsens.
Listen if confronted
In a perfect world, nobody will confront you in an unprofessional way. Unfortunately, this isn’t always the reality; sometimes you will be confronted about things and it won’t be a simple one-on-one conversation or open line of communication.
If somebody confronts you, even if you weren’t expecting it, try to take a step back and listen to what they have to say. Take a deep breath. If they’re being respectful (even if they’re a bit emotional) then allow them to finish their thought.
Repeat what they said back to them and see if you can get past the conflict and have a productive conversation.
If they are not being respectful, you have every right to stop that conversation and tell them to come talk to you when they’re ready to be respectful.
This will ensure that you bring down the conflict before it worsens and really impacts the ability for resolution to be achieved.
Be considerate
A great way to avoid conflict is simply to leave every place better than when you came. Even something as simple as leaving a mess in the lunchroom can create tension between you and the people who will be using it next.
Just pay attention to small things as considerations for your other team members and colleagues. Those little things can get on people’s nerves, so clean up after yourself and be respectful.
