Definitions of all the project team roles that you need to know!
For a project to be successful, it doesn’t just need strategic planning, but a talented team. So, what exactly are those project team roles and responsibilities?
Let’s break down the most important project team member roles.
Project Sponsor
This is one of the most important roles. Projects don’t just come out of thin air; they’re usually linked to some strategic initiative, which usually comes from senior executives.
Your project sponsor is usually a senior executive member who is representing the project that the executive team decided they want to move forward with.
Why is this important?
The project sponsor is a direct link to the project manager and the strategy that is occurring in the organization. They will provide the high-level information such as why the project is happening, what exactly they want the project manager to do, and they’re there to help course correct and ensure that the project manager is successful.
The success of the project manager and team will ensure that the project sponsor is addressing the overall needs of the organization that the executive team decided is important.
Project Manager
The project manager has the over-arching responsibility to ensure that the scope statement in the project charter actually comes to fruition.
This includes working closely with the project team, executive members, sponsor, and steering committee.
When it comes to additional activities, they are also responsible to ensure that everything is organized and documentation is up-to-date. They are responsible for creating the scope statement and gathering the initial information, charter, and project plan.
