Essential priorities every project manager needs to know!
Are you a new project manager or thinking about becoming a project manager? It’s important to know exactly what you ought to focus on in your new role.
Successful project managers know what to focus their energy on so that they don’t get lost amid the chaos and challenges that a project can bring. Here are a few essential priorities every project manager must have!
Set the standard for team communication and collaboration
Communication is critical to project teams. Everyone must be on the same page and know what’s going on. So, as a project manager, it’s your job to establish expectations for communication and collaboration.
An example of this?
Consider having all your documentation in a central location. This makes it easy for your team to stay on-track. Also, over-communicate a little and check in with your team to ensure they have all the information they need. This goes a long way!
Ensure the project is strategically aligned to organizational goals
Don’t lose sight of organizational objectives, goals and strategies as you carry out the project. Connecting to these goals ensures you stay on track and keeps your team motivated because they understand WHY you’re doing what you’re doing. It also ensures that you’re on the same page with senior executives and what they want to do.
Manage time
Time is a big component of projects. You have a start and end date and need to make sure you’re on track. So, stay on top of your calendars and schedules, and ensure your team is on track.
Managing risk is also a huge part of this! Make sure you plan for risks and have contingency and mitigation plans in place for when challenges arise.
Other important objectives of a project manager
There are a few more project manager objectives that you need to understand if you want to ensure success on your projects. There’s a lot to be said about things like budget, scope, adaptability, and continuous improvement. It’s a lot to get into here, so I’ve created a video that dives into these objectives in more detail so that you can make sure you’re equipped to handle any project, any day!
