Expert strategies to take the overwhelm out of resource allocation on your projects
It’d be amazing if everything went smoothly when resources are assigned to your project, but perfection just isn’t a project reality.
After all, your project resources are people – they take vacations, they get sick, and they have all kinds of things impacting their time and energy. It falls to you as project manager to mitigate and minimize the challenges that come with allocating project resources, and it can be confusing!
Fear not though! I have some tips to help you effectively allocate project resources so you can get them working for you and not against you.
Strategy #1: Get clarity on what’s in and what’s out
It’s difficult to identify the people you need if you’re unclear what your project is all about.
Once you get your marching orders from your project sponsor, invest some time figuring out what your project does and doesn’t involve.
Getting clarity at this point will save you so many headaches down the road, because it’ll help you identify and ask for the people you need to be successful.
Strategy #2: Map out your resources
This is all about figuring out who you need, and how much time you need from them, and it happens before you even kick off your project.
After all, you can’t properly negotiate what you need if you’re not clear on what it is. The last thing you want is to be asking management for more people and more time in the middle of your project.
