The best tips for professionalism so that you can be a rising star at the office
It’s important to carry yourself with professionalism and grace in the workplace. This is especially important if you want to get ahead and be seen as a rising star by your boss and colleagues. Professionalism takes time to learn, but I’ve compiled a list of the best tips to help you get there.
These tips come from my 20+ years of experience working with various organizations and industries. I’ve met many incredibly professional people, and many who really lack the professionalism they ought to have for success. So, be assured that these tips are really tried and true!
- Be respectful, even if others are not
It would be nice if everyone was respectful, but the truth is that this isn’t always the case. Sometimes there are even leaders that aren’t respectful. Listen… That’s their issue, not yours! Regardless, you need to rise above and be respectful to everyone, even if they’re not being respectful to you.
It doesn’t matter what their position is or where they are in the hierarchy of the organization. The rule is to treat people the way you want to be treated. DO NOT badmouth anyone and DO NOT gossip! The last thing you want to do in the workplace is to create enemies.
Another thing that goes with this is to respect company policies, whether you like them or not. They are there for a reason and if you respect them, others will see you as truly professional.
- Be truthful
Don’t lie at work! Not even a white lie. Those who are looked at in a professional light are those who are extremely transparent. They say it for what it is and they don’t sugar coat anything (but remember, they’re still respectful).
The reality is that you can be truthful and direct while still being respectful. Sugar coating things or even lying about things at work will only come back to bite you. Transparency doesn’t mean sharing EVERYTHING, but it does mean being truthful about anything that needs to be said. Lies hurt your career tremendously because they are incredibly hard to come back from and they do not allow you to be seen as trustworthy or professional. So, don’t even go down that road!
