Steer Clear of These Pitfalls

Time and time again, I see companies make the same costly mistakes – ones that derail progress and frustrate teams. If they only knew what to look for they could steer clear of those pitfalls – and save everyone a lot of time, money, and frustration along the way.

With that in mind, let me tell you about some of the  most common corporate project mistakes – and a bit about how to avoid them.

Corporate project mistake #1: no standard way of running projects

When each employee has their own way of running a project it leads to misunderstanding, confusion, rework and missed deadlines – which all costs money.

Companies often think the answer to this confusion is a project software tool. What they really need, though, is a standardized project framework that dictates how to run a project from start to finish. That ensures that everyone working on a project uses the same approach, the same tools, and the same templates.

This allows organizations to be flexible, agile and nimble, and the time and money spent on standardization? It pays for itself in no time.

Corporate project mistake #2: unrealistic timeline expectations

So many organizations kick projects off without fully considering all the steps needed to reach the end goal. The result is rushed work that’s of poor quality, or deadlines that never get met. Either way, a lot of time and money is wasted.

A project manager’s job is to understand enough about project planning to set up realistic timelines and help senior management see the realities of what they’re asking for on a project.

To do that, PMs need to be equipped with the right kind of basic project management training, (like what’s offered in my SLAY Project Management online course).
