Everything you need to know about the role of a project manager
Not totally clear on what exactly a project manager is? It’s important to know what a project manager is because project managers are so important to the success of any project across many industries. Here is a complete overview.
Project manager definition
A project manager is traditionally thought of as someone in charge of planning and executing specific tasks in order to get to the deliverable of the project.
But project management is also about motivating and managing people on the project team. Usually, those people don’t directly report into the project manager; they have other people that they report into.
So, the project manager must be really good at communicating and motivating the team through the five stages of project management to keep the project on track.
What are project managers responsible for?
Project managers oversee the big-picture view of the project. This includes the 5 specific stages of project management: Initiation, Planning, Execution, Monitor & Control, and Closing.
Within those stages are very specific tasks that project managers need to guide their team through. For example, the project manager is responsible for scope statements, ensuring timelines are working together, dependencies, budgets, resourcing, and more. There are a lot of moving pieces to a project, and the project manager must look at these things wholistically and strategically.
Essentially, the main function of a project manager is to make sure that everything is prepared so that their team can be successful to execute on the scope, time and budget.
