Tips that will make your life WAY easier as a new project manager!
Are you a new project manager eager to learn quick and simple tips that will make your role as a PM so much smoother? There are a few things you can do as a new project manager to get comfortable in your role quicker and ensure that your projects are successful.
As a project manager for over 20+ years, I’ve seen new project managers step into their role and struggle simply because nobody told them the simple tips they needed to know to be successful from the get-go.
So, let’s talk about it.
1. Don’t just be task oriented
I’ve seen lots of projects fail from project managers who are task-oriented and don’t focus enough on getting to know their project team.
When you’re too focused on the deliverable, the task, and the deadline, without taking into consideration the project team members and how you can support them, those team members end up feeling overlooked and underappreciated.
If you need help with where to start when it comes to getting to know your project teams, start by having some one-on-ones.
2. Manage Scope
As a new project manager, it is critical for you to manage scope. The last thing you want is for your project to get out of scope, because it quickly becomes difficult to get it back on track.
A huge aspect of this is change control. When you have a plan for change control and you get everyone to request change through a formal change control process, you’re setting yourself up for success from a scope perspective because you’ll have much more control over what changes are made to the scope and when.
