How to manage your virtual teams as a virtual project manager!
Working remotely has become a norm, which means that virtual project management is also becoming common. So, it’s important to know how to manage virtual teams effectively if you’re working on virtual projects!
Here are a few tips that every virtual project manager should consider implementing into their leadership.
-
Show appreciation
Project management is all about teams executing tasks, so a connected team will ensure a successful execution. This is where appreciation comes in!
Appreciation is even more critical for a virtual project because you don’t have the luxury of being in the same room with people where you can just drop by their desk and take things as they come. Instead, you need to be intentional about including appreciation in your time with your team.
Here are some ways you can do this:
- Be attuned to what’s going on.
- Send out messages of encouragement.
- Send out inspiration videos or quotes.
Those are just a few examples, but really, it’s about doing anything you can think of to show your appreciation for what your team is doing. And it’s not just you as a project manager connecting with your team; it’s also important to encourage your team members to connect with each other and show appreciation for one another.
-
Be alert to conflict via body language
Team dynamics can be very tricky, and especially so with a virtual team.
If you’re working in-person, you can feel the energy in the room and bring things into the open as you notice them arise. But virtually, it’s a very different world.
One way to combat this is by having everyone keep their cameras on during meetings so that you can see body language, which will give you insight as to how people are connecting and how they’re feeling.
