If you’re looking for a role as a project manager and are preparing for interviews as a result, you need to know exactly what questions to expect. These questions will give you a starting point and help you prepare accurate and effective answers for your project management interviews!
What are the most important skills of a project manager and why?
This question is asked so that they can see if you understand the fundamentals of project management and what goes beyond the fundamentals.
The best way to answer this question is to talk about the framework of project management, like the high-level five stages. Additionally, you should focus on leadership and how you lead people. Mention the fact that the people involved in a given project will determine the success of the project, and then talk about your strategies for how you would lead those people.
Have you worked in this industry before?
If you’ve worked in the industry that you’re applying to, then you can highlight your experiences.
If you haven’t worked in that industry before, that’s okay! What you need to do is share with them how the fundamentals of project management translate across industries because you use Subject Matter Experts to get the work done anyways – it’s really your leadership that matters.
How do you keep your team motivated?
With this question, make sure that you’re not giving examples of micromanaging, but also don’t make it seem like you’re removed and don’t do anything to motivate your team.
Remember, project management is about people, so you need to highlight how you motivate your team to get everything accomplished.
What do you do first when it comes to motivating your team? What are your expectations and change management principles? How do you set your team up for success and empower them? Any examples from your experience will be great to tie in.
