Professional communication skills will make or break your career. That’s why you do NOT want to overlook the importance of communication skills in business. Communication is one of those skills that you never stop improving and learning about. Here are some of the best tips that you need to know for success in the professional world!

Body language speaks volumes

It’s important to be reminded of how critical body language is to communication. I know we’ve all heard this before, but it’s easy to get into the rhythm of our lives and our careers and forget to pay attention to the downfalls of our bad body language that we might not even notice.

Think about positive vs. negative body language. Positive body language includes eye contact, positive gestures and hand motions, open body language, good posture, and facial expressions. Negative body language might look like closed body language such as crossing your arms, or even tapping your leg or fingers (which just makes you look impatient).

So, it’s really important to pay attention to this frequently. What are you doing with your body without even realizing it? How can you fix this to ensure you’re always displaying positive body language?

Focus on CAN, not CAN’T

How we speak to others plays an important role in how they interpret what we’re saying and establish their impression of us. If you tend to focus on what CAN’T happen, or what WON’T work, you won’t come across as a problem solver.

Be realistic about what can and can’t be done, but if something CAN’T be done, be the person who communicates potential solutions to the problem. This is honest, but still positive. Don’t only think of why something WON’T be successful, but how it CAN become successful.

Other critical communication tips

Communication often comes with nerves, active listening skills, and even issues surrounding email and text. These are important aspects of business communication skills that cannot be glossed over!
