Tips project managers don’t talk about enough!
This post won’t be about all your basic project management tips. Instead, I’ve put together a list of project management tips for you that I think project managers don’t talk about enough.
Time people out in meetings
As a project manager, you’re also a meeting facilitator. You have to run meetings, and you have to run them well.
It’s easy for people to bring their own hidden agendas into the meeting, and you need to know how to control that if you want to ensure that you’re effective, efficient, and staying focused on project items.
Timing people out in meetings is a technique to keep them on track. At the beginning of your meeting when you’re going through logistics, tell your team you’ll be “timing people out” and they can think of you like a referee. “Timing someone out” means that you capture what they’re saying so that it can be dealt with at a later time.
Ask people’s permission to do this at the beginning of the meeting. Whenever something comes up throughout the meeting that’s off-topic, you can call a time out, capture those items, and easily agree to revisit it later.
Appreciation changes everything
Projects can get stressful, but appreciation goes a long way. Showing appreciation for your team can help build trust and bond your team together.
When your project team is in the midst of getting things done, it’s easy to end up feeling underappreciated. Sharing what you appreciate about each project team member, and encouraging them to do so for each other, really helps your team bond and feel valued as they work towards a common goal.
