Become the Leader Your Team Will Want to Follow

Managing projects isn’t just about tracking deadlines, budgets, and Gantt charts. It’s also about leading a team. And let’s be real – if your project team doesn’t respect you, you’re just someone with a title, not a leader. If you want your project to successfully cross the finish line, being the kind of manager your team wants to follow is an absolute must.

Here are some practical tips for what you can do to earn the respect of your entire project team.

Tip #1 – Be consistent and fair

Double standards are a respect killer, so you want to ensure you apply the same rules to everyone on your project (including yourself) and treat everyone with the same level of respect. These are some things that will help to support that:

  • Be consistent with communication
  • Be clear with expectations
  • Hold everyone accountable in the same way
  • Address conflicts promptly

Tip #2 – Empower your team

A surefire way to earn the respect of your team is to empower them. Steer clear of micromanaging, and instead show them that you trust them. The best way to do that while also ensuring project success, is to:

  • Set your project up correctly from the beginning
  • Communicate clear expectations around roles, responsibilities, and deadlines
  • Step back and let them shine
