Some tips to hit the ground running when you get back to the office
Are you going back to the office after working remotely for a long time? A lot of us are starting to think about that right now as COVID restrictions ease up. Or, perhaps you took a purposeful career break but you’ve decided it’s time to go back to work and you need some tips for a smooth transition. Whatever your situation is, I’ve got tips for you that will get you back in the office with ease, enthusiasm, and ultimately, success.
For over 20 years, I’ve been working in office environments as well as at home. Since my job requires me to do both, I’m thankful that I’ve gotten the opportunity to master productivity in both settings. I’ve also mastered how to transition going back into an office setting after a period of working from home. So, I’m going to share with you my top tips so that you can also transition smoothly back into the office setting while not losing ANY momentum for productivity.
1 – Mirror, Mirror On The Wall
One of the top actions I recommend before going back into the office is self-reflection, particularly when it comes to your work habits. What has been working well for you at home? What has been keeping you productive? How have you been handling distractions? What has been your biggest challenge? Put a list together of answers to questions like this. These are habits that you’ll either want to continue doing in an office setting (you may have to adapt them slightly) or you’ll want to focus on eliminating. And what better time to rethink your habits than when you’re already getting a fresh new start at something, like going back to work?
2 – Jack of All Trades, Master of None
Think about what you need to do to better your skills. Are there new skill sets that you need (or perhaps just need to review since it’s been forever…)? Is there a certain area of expertise you haven’t had to use in a while due to being home? Do you need to refresh your memory on communication skills, facilitation skills, project management skills, or anything else that you haven’t been practicing to the same extent while you’ve been home? Focus on any skills you can identify and upgrade them.
Other Ways to Improve Discipline and Productivity
As I’m sure you could guess, these aren’t all the tips I use when I transition from home to the office. There are a few more top tips that I like to check off before returning to the office, and I want to share those with you. But, why do it here if I’ve already made a great video? Follow me on over to YouTube and I’ll share with you the rest of these essential tips that you need to implement to have the best possible transition back to the office. See you there!
